How We Work It Out

Your personal inflation is a weighted average of how much you spend in each category and the inflation rate of each one:

ipersonal = [∑(Spendingc × ic)] / Total Spending
Lifestyle Cost (20 years) = Total Spending × (1 + ipersonal)20

If a household spends a lot on housing (8% rise) and healthcare (6% rise), its weighted inflation rate is 5.8%. In 20 years, a $3,000-a-month lifestyle will cost $9,228, against only $4,916 at the official CPI rate.
